Map makers face the constant challenge of keeping the maps that they produce as up-to-date as possible. Inevitably new roads will be built after a map is produced and before a new edition is released. In the business of real estate, this problem is heightened because real estate developers and brokers often deal with properties on newly built roads and subdivisions that are simply not on any map. Such is the case with a real estate firm in a rapidly growing area of suburban Atlanta. Hard-working brokers try to entice prospective buyers even before the asphalt has hardened. Waiting for an updated local map that may or may not include the new roads is simply not an option. The brokers need to be able to provide a detailed map and directions to their listed properties in the product information documents that they send to their clients.
Solution:
Using a simple point-and-click tool in Street Atlas USA 2008 PLUS, the new subdivision is drawn in seconds and integrated into the existing map. Individual roads are labeled and they appear with exactly the same visual characteristics as the roads on the base map. For optimal positional accuracy, an Earthmate GPS log file is easily converted into a road. The broker simply drives along the new road with the Earthmate attached to a laptop computer, and then imports the resulting GPS log as a road. Added roads are included when calculating routes, they can be searched for using the find functions, they can be used for plotting an address when using the XData geocoding tool, and they can be used for GPS tracking. Finally the broker is able to create a transfer file, which is sent to every Street Atlas USA 2008 PLUS user in the firm, providing each broker with an up-to-date map of the area.
