Using GPS to Navigate to Highway Maintenance Sites
Problem:
A major concern of any government agency is keeping their costs within the prescribed budgetary constraints. One way of achieving this goal is to employ tools that promote efficiency in the workflow process. A city road maintenance department obviously spends a great deal of time on to road and so tools that it uses must be inherently mobile. Managing their projects and assigning priorities must necessity require them to use a mapping system but in this case, the city GIS department holds the keys to the data and the work crews must depend on a printed report to determine order of tasks on any given day or week. It has been suggested that each crew should have GIS software installed in their vehicles however, because it is assumed that this would be costly and difficult to manage, the idea has not been implemented.
Solution:
XMap 5.0 Professional provides all of the GIS tools that most field crews need and it is both affordable and easy to deploy and to operate. Furthermore, because it has been developed on the foundation of DeLorme’s core mapping platform, it comes loaded with a vast array of powerful mapping tools, right out of the box. With a single copy of XMap 5.0 GIS Enterprise installed at road maintenance department’s main office, GIS data can be quickly and easily distributed to work crews running XMap 5.0 Professional on laptop computers in their vehicles. This provides direct access to vital data right at the job site. In the integrated voice-controlled GPS navigation system ensures that each crew is efficiently guided from one worksite to the next, eliminating redundancy and lost productivity. For the road maintenance department, the initial cost to deploy an XMap 5.0 GIS solution is quickly recouped through improved workflow management and subsequent cost savings.
