A collector of historic maps is looking for a convenient way to browse his collection without having to continually remove the original prints from storage, which could potentially damage the maps. Furthermore he wants to be able to view the historic prints alongside a current map to help in determining the geographic coverage of the older maps and to show how much the area has changed.
Solution:
XMap 5.0 GIS Enterprise includes a powerful tool for registering or geographically aligning an image to the underlying map using multiple registration ponts. After scanning each of the maps in his archive, the collector imports each one using the ImageReg tab and selects several points on the map for which he can identify a corresponding point on XMap’s base map. To enhance the accuracy of the process he imports a high resolution aerial image in MrSID format to which to register the historic maps. Within minutes the map is superimposed on the base map with the position, scale, and rotation adjusted to match its actual geographic location. With XMap’s base map layering options, he can even show modern-day roads on top of the historic map allowing him to easily compare old and new.
